The son of Sir William Abdy, 4th Baronet and Mary Stotherd, he was educated at Felsted School and at St John's College, Cambridge. In 1738, Abdy was called to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn and was made a King's Counsel in 1765. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Knaresborough from 1763 to 1775.
