Singampunari

Singampunari is a town in Sivaganga District, in Tamil Nadu, India. The town comes under the Thirupathur constituency.

This is an industrial town. In Singampunari, the main industry is production of coconut rope. It is the home for many groundnut oil mills and many more small scale industries. The places to see near by this town are Piranmalai or Parambumalai which is supposed to be place of Vallel Pari (one among the seven ancient Tamil patrons). This place experience dry weather for most period of the year.

It is about 55 km from Madurai (58 km from Dindigul, 65 km from Tiruchi, 50 km from Karaikudi), being 8 km from Kottampatti which lies along the Madurai-Chennai main road. It also lies on the Palzani - Ramnad route.

It has a peculiar history. The region is known as Anjal Naadu or Aindhu Nilai Naadu. This Naadu was divided into five mangalam - KaNNa Mangalam, SeerSErndha Mangalam, VElza Mangalam, etc.

It was made up military cantonments. Since it is in northern belt of Pandya country, it had a network of forts.

In the past a very dense jungle surrounded the place.

It was watered by a river which was known in inscriptions as 'Vilzisilai AaRu'.

Anjal Nadu is the home region of a martial class of people known as 'ILamagar'

As of 2001 India census, Singampuneri had a population of 16,415. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Singampuneri has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 65%. In Singampuneri, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There are 3 churches at Singampunari. A Roman Catholoic church, Church of South India and Assembly of God Church.

There are Government elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and higher secondary schools. There are also private english medium schools.

Chithar "vathiyar Ayya" Kovil is a famous temple in this town.

From Singampunari 3 km towards North Village call Vengaipatti is a nice and beauityful village. Chennai guy Baskar Anjappan’s native is this village but born and gotup in Chennai city.
