[edit] Conflict of Interest

I noticed that your wikipedia biography lists you as being a professor at the NPS and as having founded Sandstorm Enterprises. I would refer you to Wikipedia:Conflict of interest which strongly discourages the creation or editing of articles about things you are closely associated with. I'll watch here for your response. Mbisanz (talk) 18:59, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey, got your email. I didn't create those pages, but they contained errors so I fixed them. But if you feel passionate about it, you should just delete them all. Simsong (talk) 01:08, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

um, I didn't email you and while I questioned one of the page's notability, I have no problem with the other 2 articles. What I object to is a user editing articles about themselves or people/things they are closely associated with. Mbisanz (talk) 01:23, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Simsong, as some examples of what I was saying, you removed a template here [1] that another user had inserted, questioning the notability and sources of the article. Since its about your company, you might not be the best person to judge its notability.
  • In this edit [2] to your article, you added your personal interests, which, without outside sources such as another author talking about you, would not be included in an encyclopedia.
    • Look, those aren't interests, those are positions that I hold. Would you like me to reference the official website at Harvard and NPS? Simsong (talk) 15:46, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
  • Here [3] you changed the word "jokingly" to "incorrectly", despite the source of a parody website which would have strongly suggested "jokingly"
    • Do you think we should change that back?
  • In this series of edits [4] you add your birth year without a source, a statement about your gradfather's SSN, and you remove a substantial amount of sourced material about the parody of your name. These are all things to be avoided when editing an article in which you have a COI. Thanks. Mbisanz (talk) 01:37, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
    • I removed the information about my grandfather's SSN and other unsourced information that I contributed. I also added sources for the affiliations. Given that, I'd like to remove the conflict of interest notation.. Simsong (talk) 15:49, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
I've gone back to all three articles and re-edited them for content, etc, removing the COI tags as well. I just ran across this page, which gives a better description than my comments on how to edit articles that your associated with Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance, apologies for the Sophal's Ear mistake, it seemed like there was a connection. • I don't have a close connection with Sophal Ear. I went to a talk that he gave and thought he should have a wikipedia entry. He's in a different department. I'd like to remove the COI. Simsong (talk) 16:14, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sandstorm Enterprises article

I have substantially cut back the material on this page:

  • Most coverage of security companies on WP is not accompanied by a CV-style list of patents (how would WP cover IBM if it did?). I realize you added this to help establish notability. See the talk page for my response to that.
  • I found the notion of NetIntercept being a "first" to be POV; anybody can declare a new "space" for their product and claim to be a first --- that's marketing 101. In your case, you have issues with both Raytheon and EnGarde doing substantially the same thing.
  • I worked on a commercial wardialer prior to 1998; if you want this to be a "first", you'll have to source it.

Most importantly, if you're going to edit an article about a company you founded, please declare your potential conflict of interest on the article's talk page.

Thanks!

    • Please tell me about your commercial war dialer. If you want to edit the Sandstorm article, go ahead. Simsong (talk) 04:58, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
