Talk:Simbu Province
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The reference to the word sipu being the origin of the name Simbu is a little inaccurate. With all due respect to the original contributor, the reference point given is an article in an in-flight magazine. The Kuman language is a language I speak.
Sipu (spelt in the above noted article sipu-u-u, as it usually said in a loud proclamation with the last syllable left to drag on) does not directly mean thank you. It is more a proclamation of pleasure and gratitude.
The story related by many elders in Simbu say that when Europeans arrived bearing gifts the locals shouted Sipu Sipu as an expression of excitement intermixed with gratitude.
The section on education also is not quite accurate. There are many more than three secondary schools in the region (futther down the page the article contradicts and says there are two secondary schools), however I will have to do some research to get the right amount. But some of the obvious missing ones are Kundiawa Lutheran High School, Mt Wilhelm High School & Gumine High School
