He started his racing career in Sydney in 1981 with a motorcross race in Appin and won his first race at the same circuit that year[3]. He has since competed in numerous rally events worldwide including the Dakar Rally six times in which he completed the event four times[4] (including his first attempt in 1998). He gained international fame when he was involved in the TV series Race To Dakar in which he trained Charley Boorman to race off-road and then compete in the Lisbon to Dakar rally in 2006. During the event Charley Boorman retired due to injury and Simon went onto complete the race finishing in 86th position[5].

Simon currently manages the BMW Motorrad's off-road training facility in south Wales[6], where he teaches motorcyclists to ride off-road[7].

In December 2007 it was announced that Simon plans to compete in the Transorientale Rally[8] in 2008. The rally starts in St Petersberg on the 12th of June and finishes in Beijing on the 28th of June 2008.
