Silverstream is a suburb of Upper Hutt in the lower North Island of New Zealand. It is at the southern end of the city close to the Taita Gorge, which separates Upper Hutt from Lower Hutt. Schools in Silverstream are Silverstream Kindergarten, Silverstream Christian School, Silverstream School and St. Patrick's College.
Silverstream is on the Wairarapa and Hutt Valley Railway Lines, with half-hourly daytime electric services operated by Tranz Metro, which reach Lower Hutt in around 15 minutes and Wellington in around 35 minutes. Many commuters, however, still use their cars.
Pinehaven is a picturesque valley adjacent to Silverstream, set further back into the eastern pine clad hills. Its focus points are the large reserve and Pinehaven school.
In Silverstream is the Silver Stream Railway, a heritage railway operating a number of preserved locomotives that formerly worked on New Zealand's national rail network. One of these locomotives is a C class engine that is over 130 years old. The railway periodically holds special themed days, such as a "Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends Day", and these are particularly popular with children. The line was part of the Wairarapa Line before a deviation was opened in 1954.
