The Silverburn Centre is a new 'out of town' shopping centre located on Barrhead Road in Pollok, south of Glasgow, Scotland. The development replaces the 75 acre (214,000 square ft) Pollok centre with a brand new 1,500,000-square-foot (100,000 m²) shopping centre, anchored by Tesco, Next, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams.

The completed Silverburn opened for the first time on Thursday 25 October 2007, although Scotland's largest Tesco Extra opened on July 10th 2006 at the site, replacing the Tesco store in the old Pollok Centre. The Centre houses 95 shopping units and 14 restaurants and cafes, although not all of these units have opened for trading yet.

Developed by Retail Property Holdings Ltd (RPH), it is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK.

The Centre is Glasgow's fifth out of town shopping centre, following Braehead Shopping Centre, Glasgow Fort and Parkhead Forge as well as East Kilbride shopping centre. Catering for a target population from across Scotland, the Centre will arguably benefit Ayrshire, especially with the completion of the M77 to Kilmarnock. The developers have aimed to attract wealthy shoppers from affluent suburbs such as Newton Mearns, as well as the towns and villages in Ayrshire.

It is unusual for large out of town shopping centres to open in the UK, as the country's planning laws aim to protect existing town centres [2], and there is some concern about the impact that the Silverburn Centre will have on existing centres especially Braehead and market towns such as Kilmarnock.[3]

Despite these concerns, the impact on Glasgow city centre is expected to be limited and there are significant expansion plans for the city centre's two largest retail malls the St Enoch Centre & Buchanan Galleries. Silverburn is speculated to be an attempt by Glasgow City Council to regain the money which was lost in business tax after the ruling that Braehead Shopping centre was in the Renfrewshire Council area, contrary to an agreement between the two councils to share the development.

[edit] Travelling to Silverburn

[edit] By Road

Silverburn is easily accessible from Junction 2 of the M77, and has its own dedicated slip roads for those coming from and going to the South.

Locally, access to Silverburn's car parks can be found from either Barrhead Road by the M77, or by Peat Road via Cowglen Road, just off Barrhead Road.

It should be noted that Tesco's car park is privately owned by Tesco, and in conjunction with Euro Car Parks now operates a fixed £70 Parking Charge Notification policy on cars parked for longer than four hours. No such charges apply to the Red, Yellow, Green or Blue Silverburn car parks however.

It is worth noting that it is not just a Parking Charge Notice being issued for staying more than 4hrs but also if you return within 4hrs, plus if you park in a disabled bay.

NOTE: These Parking Charge Notices ARE NOT FINES. You do not need to pay them. They are just invoices issued by these parking companies who will send you all sorts of letters to make you pay up. Do a google search for Tesco Silverburn Parking and visit the various forums that discus these sort of parking companies. DON'T BE FOOLED INTO PAYING.

There is no point in going into customer services and complaining to them or asking to speak with the manager of Tesco. Their attitude is not good at all. On the other hand please don't complain to the Silverburn management, its nothing to do with them but I have found them to be very sympathetic about it all.

[edit] By Bus

Silverburn has its own Bus Stand to the rear of the Centre on Cowglen Road, receiving services such as First's X8 from Glasgow City Centre.
