Silver steel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Silver Steel is a long established carbon steel, usually alloyed with a small chromium content which improves its wear resistance.

Silver Steel is supplied centreless precision ground in round bar or cold drawn to close tolerances of BS1407. It is guaranteed for surface finish and free from any carburisation.

Supplied in metric and imperial diameter, in 330mm, 1 metre and 2 metre lengths

Heat Treatment: Heat to 770/780°C then water quench (immediately) Sizes up to 5/16" diameter may be oil hardened for 800/810°C

As hardened silver steel will achieve approximately 65/63 hardness Rockwell C. It can be tempered to reduce the hardness.[1]

As precision ground rounds this steel is often used in the annealed condition of 180 hardness Brinell.
