[edit] History
Silver Lake Regional High School was founded in 1955 and comprised the towns of Pembroke, Kingston, Plympton and Halifax in Southeastern Massachusetts. The original building of the school stood until 2005 when it was torn down, however the original football field, Sirico Field, remains. The Silver Lake campus eventually grew too small for the growing populations of the towns. Overcrowding in the school led the town of Pembroke to withdraw from the district and form its own independent school district.
Because of overcrowding and an outdated school a new high school was constructed on the site of the original building. The school is one of the most expensive standing in Massachusetts and is right next to the new Silver Lake Middle School.
[edit] Athletics
The name for the Silver Lake teams is the Lakers.
For 49 years Silver Lake competed in Division I athletics in the Old Colony League in the MIAA. The school boasted a largely successful football program (1980 Division III Super Bowl Champions) but was regionally known for excelling in basketball, hockey (in which it reached the state finals in 1978) and soccer (in which it won a state title in 1988).
In 2005, after the withdrawal of the town of Pembroke, Silver Lake began competing in Division II. The Lakers now compete in the Patriot League of Southeastern Massachusetts. The most recent success of a Silver Lake team was the men's soccer team (lead by Patriot League All-Star's Scott Cluff, Dominic DeChiara, Steve Menice, and goalie Ryan Paiva) advancing to the regional semifinals but losing to Hingham.
For most of its existence, Silver Lake's chief rival was Plymouth-Carver Regional High School, until the breakup of P-C into three separate high schools. The most notable current school rivalries are with Pembroke High School and Duxbury. Silver Lake's boys Varsity Tennis team is also noted as having a fierce rivalry against Hingham.[citations needed]
In 2006 the girls soccer team won the first Patriot League title in school history with a win over Duxbury 2-1. Sarah Rogers scored the game winner in the second half. The Lady Lakers finished the season 10-3-3 on the season.
The 2007 Silver Lake boys soccer team won another Patriot League title after beating Duxbury 4-1. Adam Smith and Tucker Fairbanks both had two goals in the game. Both the Lakers and Dragons have a 7-2-2 league record but Silver Lake won the tiebreaker of head to head with a win and a tie against Duxbury.[citations needed]
The Silver Lake boys hockey team had a terrific season in 07-08. Captains Craig Mckinnon, Josh Lindquist, and Steve Berna helped lead the team to a 14-9-2 record heading into the postseason. With tough defense and an even stronger offense, the lakers made it past Blue Hills with one second left by defensemen Eric Gay and a final score of 5-4. The lakers then made it past Bourne with a score of 3-1 in the division 3 south quaterfinals. The lakers would then face Westwood, with a record of 13-6-2. The lakers managed to come back in the third period to tie the game, but Westwood got to the lakers early in overtime to end the Lakers' postseason run.
[edit] Silver Lake in the news
In 2002 Silver Lake grabbed headlines after a student engaged in sexual acts on a school bus. It was covered on the O'Reilly Factor when Bill O'Reilly called for the principal to be fired. Most recently it made news when a distraught mother made threats against the Freshman football team.[1]
The Rachel Souza Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established for students in memory of 1997 graduate Rachel Entwistle (née Souza).
In 2007 the school was the location for an episode of the MTV television show "Made." During the filming, which lasted from August 2007 until October 2007, Bryce Fallon, a junior at the time, was selected to be featured on the show and given an education in ballroom dancing. His final performance was at the first annual Silver Lake's Got Talent, talent competition.
