Sillyon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sillyon was a city on the Pamphylian plain in Anatolia, Turkey. It may have been founded by migrants following the Trojan War. A recently uncovered statue base bearing the name Mopsos suggests common origins with the cities of Perge and Aspendos. The earliest known mention of Sillyon comes from the explorer Scylax in the middle 4th century BCE, shortly before Alexander the Great. Both Scylax and the later Greek historian Arrian called it Syllium.

Sillyon was attacked by Alexander the Great during his return from Side but he was unable to capture it.

The ruins of Sillyon are Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and partly Seljuks. Among these are remains of city gates, a stadium, amphitheatre (some of which has tumbled because of a landslide), odeon, temple, cistern and a gymnasium.
