The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, established in 1995, is the first government-private initiative in the region. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission [2] and approved by the Government of India. It is a branch of the Manipal University in Manipal, Karnataka. Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) is a unique private-government partnership in the field of higher education between the Manipal Group and the Government of Sikkim. This university was established with the objective of providing the best in education for students in East India. SMU has two constituent institutes - Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT). These two institutes were established with the mission of providing excellent educational opportunities for the young minds of Sikkim.
Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS)
The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), located at Tadong, is a constituent college of the Sikkim Manipal University (SMU). SMIMS offers MBBS, Nursing and Physiotherapy courses, besides M.Sc. programs in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy. The Central Referral Hospital and STNM Hospital in Gangtok offer clinical training opportunities to students.

It is located 8 km (5 miles) before (below) Gangtok, Sikkim on the National Highway (NH) 31A, at a place called Tadong 5 mile. It is about 4 km after (above) Ranipool, overlying the river Ranikhola. It is one of the most well known universities in India imparting distance education in various disciplines.

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology
Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) was established in 14th June 1997 and has its own campus at Majitar, Rangpo, near the West Bengal and Sikkim border. The academic session commenced in July 1997. The Institute attracts students from all over the country, with over 1700 students enrolled in the various engineering disciplines. 102 full-time faculties are on hand to deliver quality education. SMIT is a new developing centre of excellence with the latest laboratory facilities, good library and modern means to teaching. With the help of Sikkim Government, the institute has a mission of being the best institute in the country. SMIT is a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University.

The institute has been graced by visits of several high profile personalities from the field of technology. The students of the college had an opportunity to interact with Dr. Raja Ramanna, India’s pioneering nuclear scientist. The college was also graced by the visit of Mr. B. Bhattacharya, DGM- Tata Technologies. Not only this, Prof. Rajib Mall, Professor Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and Prof. Pankaj Jalote, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi visited the campus recently and enlightened the students on current trends in computer technology. The campus is self sufficient and also provides hostel facilities to both boys and girls. State-of-the-art infrastructure, a well stocked library, technical labs set up in collaboration with industry, industry-interaction, a placement cell and green surroundings make it one of the best engineering institutes in the country today. The institute offers a staggering array of graduate and post-graduate programs in diverse technical fields. The institute organizes several fests like Vaastusasmitam of Computer Science and Engineering, Bremsstrah of Department of Electronics and Communication. Recently, the institute had organized the National Conference, which attracted participants from all across the country. The institute completed its 7th Annual Convocation recently. Kaalrav, is the annual fest of the institute, which attracts several colleges. The event is studded with several competitions like Solo Dance, Quiz competitions, Group Dance etc.
The Placement Boom
In the year 2007, the institute broke all campus recruitment records, when three giant corporates viz. Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant Technology Solutions and Infosys visited the campus on the same day and selected more than 300 students. The highest number of students was selected by Tata Consultancy Services, 143. Other companies like TechMahindra, HCL, Microland, IBM Global Services, Tata Elxsi and many more visited the campus subsequently. The Training and Placement Cell is headed by Dr. Shudhir Ranjan Dey, who played an instrumental part during the recruitment process. Off-Campus Placements was also done where several unplaced candidates went to Guwahati to attend the interview process. Companies like Satyam etc. selected some of the institute's students.
