Siepmann, I'm concerned about all these new pages you are creating. Where are you getting the material for the pages from?--Kchase T 09:38, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- All the material is just stuff that I learnt when I was a member of the CCF. The speed at which I'm creating them is due to the fact that I'm lifting it from my own website onto Wiki!—Preceding unsigned comment added by Siepmann (talk • contribs)

- Thanks for looking out. Actually, I am going to remove the images because I can't remember where I got them from (it was years ago I did this stuff) and they may have been out of a book - better not risk it! Thanks Siepmann 09:50, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please comment
Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Handle_this_situation_-_going_to_bed nothing personal --mboverload@ 10:09, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Hi - yes - I've explained this to Kchase - I'm just transferring a bunch of articles from my own website onto Wiki. Siepmann 10:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that sums up the problem. The articles you have added appear to have been just transferred from another site. Whether or not there is any IP owned by the Royal Navy in them is just one issue; these articles appear to be largely unencyclopedic, containing a mix of instruction manuals, lists of rules and descriptions of sailing practices. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, and be sure that the articles you create will be appropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia. Another issue is that they appear to be composed mostly of raw HTML — this makes things difficult for future editors and creates a whole host of problems. You might take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style to read about recommended formatting and writing practices.
- Your efforts are appreciated, but I am concerned that the articles you've added will just end up creating a lot of work for other editors and for admins trying to clean things up. --Ptkfgs 10:19, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Your website
It's a good idea, if you're transferring information from your own website here, to just put a quick note on the talk page of the article saying where the original website is/was, and that you are the author and you're now releasing the text under Wikipedia's terms (i.e. you're renouncing the copyright yourself). Otherwise it may be marked as a copyright violation if someone finds your website and notices the text is the same, and people's time will be wasted lookint into it. I think there are also concerns about how suitable some of this is for an encyclopaedia. --ajn (talk) 10:22, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome
Welcome!
Hello, Siepmann, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}}
on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!
I hope you take a look at the links above to help you understand how to improve your articles so they become excellent articles. Some basic suggestions:
- The articles need introductions. For example, I don't know what rules of the road you are talking about. (They don't sound like the rules of driving around California where I live!) Assume an international readership of all ages.
- Add links to other articles, and when you are done, add links to your articles.
- Find out what articles already exist on the topic. Perhaps there is already an article that has some or all of the information you are adding. One way to find articles is to look in the category where you would expect the article to be.
- Ask for help if you need it.
- Don't be scared off by easily. It takes a while to get used to how things work. Comments might seem harsh so try not to take it personally. Some "mistakes" can look just like vandalism.
