Sierra Trading Post is an online and catalog retailer that sells seconds, overstocks and closeouts. The Cheyenne, Wyoming-based company offers products in categories like outdoor recreation and adventure gear, footwear, clothing and home decor and claims to offer everyday savings of 35-70% on their products. The company sells merchandise through four retail stores, nine mailed catalog titles and a company Website. Sierra Trading Post carries discounted products from approximately 1,000 name-brand manufacturers.

SierraTradingPost.com first launched in December of 1998 and was included in the "Internet Retailer Top 400 List" in 2004 and the "Top 500 List" in 2005, 2006, and 2007.[1]

Sierra Trading Post operates four brick-and-mortar outlet stores. The original business, including a warehouse and retail store, was located in Reno, Nevada, where a retail store is still in operation. The company also has a retail store at the current headquarters in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and two other stores located in Cody, Wyoming and Meridian, Idaho.[2]

The first Sierra Trading Post catalog had 16 pages of hand-drawn merchandise printed in two colors. Today, the company mails nine catalog titles with hundreds of items in each catalog, represented in full-color digital photography. The company’s catalog line has expanded to include specialty titles, as well as the original "core" catalog. All catalogs are mailed several times per year.

  • The "core" catalog, titled Sierra Trading Post, features the broadest range of products.
  • The Sierra Woman catalog carries products for the working woman and stay-at-home mom. It includes active wear, casual office wear, children's clothing, home decor and footwear.
  • The Sierra Traditions for Men and the Sierra Woman Traditions catalogs include higher-end suits, shoes and coats for men and women.
  • The Sierra Shoes, Etc. catalog includes shoes, boots and sandals for casual and outdoor sporting needs.
  • Sierra Outdoors has equipment, gear and apparel for outdoor activities such as hunting, camping and fishing. Outdoor work wear and foot wear are also sold in the Outdoors catalog.
  • Sierra Adventure Edge has outdoor gear and apparel including skiing, biking, running and adventure sports.
  • Sierra Travel has travel equipment, luggage and clothing.
  • The Hot Deals catalog only has items priced at $99.95 or less and includes products from every category sold at Sierra Trading Post.

Sierra Trading Post was founded in Reno, Nevada in 1986 by Keith Richardson and his wife Bobbi. The original location had 500 square feet (46 m²) of office space. The current locations have over 500,000 square feet (50,000 m²) of operating space. The business’ claims to hold to three guiding principles that are aimed at giving optimal customer service, maintaining low operating costs to keep customer savings higher, and keeping the company's business ethics consistent with the owners' Christian faith.[3]
