A referendum to confirm the presidential candidate Joseph Saidu Momoh was held in Sierra Leone on 1 October 1985.[1] As the country was a single-party state under the All People's Congress at the time, only one candidate was allowed, and therefore a referendum to approve the sole candidate was carried out in place of an election. It was the country's first direct vote for president.[2]
Momoh's candidacy was approved by 99.85% of the votes.
