[edit] Background
SIENNÁ was born in Kyoto, Japan. She has been musically active by playing the classical piano since she was 4. Her very first performance was taken place when she was 10 as a singer at a local contest in Osaka, Japan. There she won a silver medal for her voice & ability. When she was 11, she joined a brass band at Seibo Gakuin Elementary School (聖母学院小学校) in Kyoto, & played trombone for 2 years.
Music was the best friend in her entire childhood. She has always been listening to any kinds of music, but was especially attracted by the classical music, The Beatles & 70s J-Pop. However, when she listened to the modern electronic sounds created by Japanese techno-electronica pioneers like Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO)& Ryuichi Sakamoto for the first time in the 70s, she immediately knew “this is it!”.
In her teens, she attended Seibo Gakuin High School (聖母学院高等学校) in Kyoto, during which time she broadened her interest in hard rock music, developing a skill of the heavy electronic guitars. Some of her favorite bands include Ratt, TNT, Ozzy Osbourne and more. On the other hand, she was missing something she already could; playing the piano. To realize innovative future-sounds like YMO, she decided to buy the first & probably the last loyal partner of hers, Roland D-50. It has never let her down – & it is still her main soft synthesizer she uses on stage today. The excitement & pleasure to be on stage in front of the large audience, have never been forgotten since her first stage when she was 10. Later, she was singing & playing the piano at a lounge-club in Kobe, Japan, while she attended Kansai Gaidai College (関西外国語大学) in Osaka. She was looking for a music-related occupation at that time. However, she was not succeeded. She found out a possibility to take a higher education in the Scandinavian cultural science, which was an extended subject from her major in college education. She moved to Norway as a student in 1995. She learned Norwegian language, & spent 9 years to obtain the master degree programs at the University of Oslo & the University of Bergen.
[edit] Abòn Records, Norway
When she completed her education in Norway in 2004, she suddenly got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity from one of Scandinavia's greatest producers. His name was Abòn - a genuine multi-talent & a long-time collaborator of Norwegian guitar maestro Ronni Le Tekro (TNT, Rypdal & Tekro, Vagabond etc.). With his assistance, she started to use music software Logic & she learned it fast. The program opened a lot of possibilities for her – f.ex. to create her own musical style, which sounded quite “freestyle” & “electronic”. When Abòn listened to her demos for the first time, he said to her simply “release them from us”.
[edit] Ambience
SIENNÁ debuted with EP “Ambience” from Norwegian electronica-hiphop label Abòn Records in June 2005. She received a plenty of positive feedbacks & also a fabulous describtion about her music; "sound like an oriental version of Goldfrapp, Underworld & The Future Sound Of London". In addition, she provided license for diverse audio products produced by world's major electronic company Philips Electronics - together with her colleagues at Bent Music based in Toronto, Canada.
[edit] This Is New Music
”This Is New Music” is the 3rd release, & the 1st full-length album from Abòn. SIENNÁ played a moody synth on it as a guest artist.
[edit] A Pure Land
2.5 years after the sensational debut, in January 2008, she released her 1st full-length album “A Pure Land” - a brand new collection of freestyle electronic-club-jazz tracks. A pure land is one of the major buddhistic beliefs which characterize her hometown Kyoto. She has followed a natural flow of her feelings towards her hometown, in which her sense of cultural identity permanently formed from. She had an opportunity working with international guest artists Nils Petter Molvaer (Norway), Abòn (Norway), Stefano Panunzi (Italy), Juju & Jordash (Netherland) & Hectór Ramirez Tato (China/ Mexico) on the album.
