Siegel Clyne (シーゲル・クライン Shīgeru Kurain?) is a fictional character in the Cosmic Era timeline of the fictional anime Gundam metaseries.

[edit] Gundam SEED

Father to Lacus Clyne, Siegel Clyne is chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council and the leader of its moderate faction. He does not have the hate most Coordinators have towards Naturals; this had made him and his supporters the minority in the PLANT Supreme Council. During his term he tried everything in his power to make peace between Naturals and Coordinators. However his term ended before Operation Spit Break and he was succeeded by the more aggressive Patrick Zala.

Before Patrick came to power, Siegel confronted him about his views saying that Coordinators must learn to live side by side with the Naturals for a very important reason: the decreasing birth rates among third-generation Coordinators. But Patrick does not listen and retorts that their superior intelligence will solve this problem, and that he refuses to let their people go back to being Naturals. Siegel finds this statement very problematic because they didn't evolve in the first place. Nevertheless, he accepts the outcome when Patrick comes to power.

While he was no longer Chairman, he was still valued as an advisor to the PLANT Supreme Council. He begins to grow increasingly frustrated that his voice is no longer heard as Patrick's radical ideals gain increasing influence over the council and that Patrick, once Siegel's close friend, had changed so much as the result of the death of his wife, Lenore. Siegel eventually leaves the political scene, gaining information from Eileen Canaver, the deputy leader of the moderate faction.

During this time, Kira Yamato is brought to the Clyne family's residence to recover after his near fatal battle with Athrun Zala, Lacus' fiancé and Kira's childhood friend. Siegel soon learns from Canaver that while Operation Spit Break, will be initiated, the Council has decided to change the target to JOSH-A (Joint Supreme Headquarters - Alaska) of the Earth Alliance rather than the originally intended target of Panama, where most Earth forces were concentrated.

Kira, knowing his friends on board Archangel will be in grave danger, wishes to return to Earth to protect them, but finds that he will not be able to under conventional means. Siegel, seeing Kira's sincere desire to end the war and protect others, has Lacus present Kira with ZGMF-X10A Freedom.

Soon afterwards, the Clynes are both branded traitors for betraying the PLANTs by giving away military secrets to the enemy. As Eileen Canaver and the remaining members of the moderate faction are arrested, Siegel and Lacus separate and fall under the protection of officers still loyal to the Clynes, including Andrew Waltfeld and his second in command, Martin DaCosta. The group formed the aptly named "Clyne Faction", which would later become a key part in the Three Ships Alliance.

While Lacus managed to elude capture and conspired with Waltfeld to steal the Eternal, Siegel was unfortunately killed along with a handful of loyal bodyguards by an extermination squad sent by Patrick Zala and Rau Le Creuset. Just as he is killed, Lacus reiterates his views over a pirate radio broadcast saying that Coordinators must realize that they have not evolved into a separate species.
