Born on August 12, 1948 Siddaramana Hundi, a remote village in Varuna Hobli of Mysore District, Shri. Siddaramaiah hails from a poor farming Community. Coming from an illiterate family, Shri. Siddaramaiah is the maiden sophomore of his family who graduated from Mysore University with B. Sc Degree. Later he did his L.L.B from the same university and pursued the Law Profession for more time.
Sri Siddaramaiah an eloquent speaker in his student days was known for his oratory power. He was influenced by socialism advocate by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. To explore more meaningful and effective avenues to achieve social justice for the downtrodden and the weaker sections of society he bade adieu to his law pursuit and entered political field.
Contesting on Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket, he entered the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly as its member during 1983 from Chamundeshwari Constituency in Mysore District. Later he joined the ruling Janata Party Government. He became the first president of Kannada Watchdog Committee (Kannada Kavalu Samiti) set up to supervise the implementation of Kannada as official language. He served for the enrichment of Kannada Language and culture of the state. Later he became a state minister for Sericulture and was instrumental in the all around development of Sericulture Department and Silk Industry in the state.
During the Mid-term poll in 1985, Shri. Siddaramaiah got re-elected from the same constituency for the 8th Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He became Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, which he served with distinction. He affection and love for the rural poor, was best manifested in the programme and the policies he implemented during his tenure as the Minister of this Portfolio. Later he became Minister for transport and served the Ministry with unmistakable zeal.
Shri Siddaramaiah is a leader of mass. He popular among all sections of the society in general and a symbol of hope to the backward class people in particular. As a secretary general of Janata Dal, he organised ranks and files of the party touring the length and breadth of the state.
He was elected again in the 1994 General Elections to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the same Constituency. This time he became Minister for Finance, to which he responded very quickly by rising to the occasion. He filled coffers of the state; repaid the debts of previous government and the state never again went for an overdraft. It was an amazing feat by any standards. He pooled effectively the resources for development activities. M/s. CRISIL, a leading independent credit rating company, in its report has remarked Karnataka as a state with a sound financial position in the country. Now Siddaramaiah has joined the Congress party after breaking away from the JD(S) due to his differences with party supremo Deve Gowda's style of functioning. He won chamundeshwari bypolls by 257 votes against Shivabasappa who was the joint candidate of the BJP and the JD(S).
Siddaramaiah joining the congress has consolidated the crucial kuruba vote towards it.
