Established by Royal Charter over 100 years ago as the first Thai bank, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) (Thai:ธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์) has a unique heritage and a long history of providing exemplary service to its customers. From a humble start, the SCB Group has now emerged as the most complete financial services franchise in Thailand. Through effective leverage of this franchise, it is positioned as the Premier Universal Bank in the country. SCB achieved the #1 ranking in branch and ATM networks among Thai commercial banks in 2005, and has maintained that position ever since.

Siam Commercial Bank was established as the “Book Club” on October 4, 1904 by His Royal Highness Prince Mahisara Rajaharudaya, a brother of King Rama V, who was convinced that it was vital for Siam to have its own banking system to serve the country’s economic development. “The Book Club” prospered and expanded, and on January 30, 1907, King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) granted his royal approval for “The Siam Commercial Bank” to officially operate as a commercial bank. A chronology of key events are as follows:
- 1904: SCB opens its first office at the Privy Purse in Ban Moh district.
- 1908: SCB opens its headquarters in Bangkok’s Talad Noi district.
- 1912: SCB opens its first branch in the Ratchawong pier area of Sampeng District.
- 1920: SCB opens its first regional branch in Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat province.
- 1927 - 1930: SCB establishes its first branches in the Northern Region in Chiangmai and Lampang.
- January 27, 1939: SCB changes its name to “Siam Commercial Bank” in English, and “Thanakarn Thai Panich” in Thai.
- 1971: SCB’s head office moves from Talad Noi district to Petchburi Road to support the growth of its operations.
- 1976: SCB registers on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
- 1983: SCB introduces Thailand’s first ATM service.
- February 19, 1993: SCB registers as a public company and is henceforth known as “Siam Commercial Bank Public Company Limited”.
- January 29, 1996: SCB moves its headquarters to SCB Park Plaza on Ratchadapisek Road in Jatujak District of Bangkok and records assets of over 500 billion baht.
- January 30, 2007: The Bank celebrates its 100th anniversary.
Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) is widely recognized as a premier universal banking group in Thailand, fully equipped with a wide array of financial products and services to fully respond to client needs through the strong synergy of its business groups and affiliated companies. The Bank addresses the more complex needs of its customers through retail services that include mortgage and personal credit, ATM cards, debit and credit cards, currency exchange facilities, overseas remittance, and investment and bancassurance products. In 2007, SCB recorded the highest market capitalization (Baht 291 billion) among Thai financial institutions with assets surpassing the Baht 1 trillion threshold. Furthermore, the Bank is a leader in Retail Banking services – mortgage loans, credit cards, asset management, and bancassurance. The Bank also maintained its no.1 position in retail distribution networks with 874 branches, 4,833 ATMs, and 141 exchange kiosks at the end of 2007.

2007 saw SCB once again achieving recognition for outstanding performance, with the Bank receiving some 34 business awards and 21 excellent rankings from outstanding local and international publications and institutions. The Bank received the following awards:

SCB ended the year with “Best Thailand Deal” and Best Local Currency Bond Deal of the Year in South East Asia” awards from FinanceAsia and Alpha South East Asia respectively, while being ranked Number 15 in The Top 80 Retail Banks in the Asia Pacific Region by The Asian Banker. Also, the Bank received the Best Journalism Award from Catholic Social Communications of Thailand.
