"Si demain... (Turn Around)" is a 2003 single recorded by Bonnie Tyler and Kareen Antonn, and written by Emmanuel Pribys. First song by this duet, it was a great success particularly in French-speaking European countries and helped the general public discover the French singer Kareen Antonn[1].

[edit] Background and writing

Bonnie Tyler had a hit with "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in 1984. Kareen Antonn explained that "in 2003, along with her friend Emmanuel Pribys, she ha[d] the apparently insane idea to record a French adaptation of "Total Eclipse of the Heart"in duet with Bonnie Tyler. A demo [was] sent to the international star: surprised, impressed by the voice of [Antonn], Bonnie Tyler agree[d] to make an exception to the rule which she had dictated not to re-record her own songs"[2]

During interviews, Tyler detailed the way in which the things occurred. She explained that she had always refused to re-record her own hits because she did not like what was proposed. Moreover, according to her, "Total Eclipse [of the Heart]" was such a special song and [she] did not think it could be a duet".[3] However, she declared : "When I received Kareen Antonn's version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart", I believed that my ears were going to explode. I didn't know if Kareen were a star or an unknown person in France, but what I had heard was just extraordinary. When she asked me to sing the song with her, I said "yes" immediately. The only thing that frightened me was singing in French, because I don't speak it at all". But she managed to surmount her nerves thanks to the assistance that Kareen Antonn gave her.[4]

The Welsh artist came to Paris to record the title with Kareen Antonn at the end of 2003[5]. The two women quickly got on well and the single was recorded in just a couple of hours[3]. According to Tyler, the success was immediate and "amazing". She explained to BBC News Online that "[the single] was released three weeks earlier than planned after people heard it on the radio and went into the shops trying to buy it".[3]. Finally, the song was marketed in France on December 19, 2003

After the unexpected success of this single, the duet decided to record a second single which is also a French language remake of another of Bonnie Tyler's old songs, "It's a Heartache". Released on June 7, 2004, "Si tout s'arrête (It' a Heartache)" didn't have the same success and peaked at #12 carried out the week of its debut at the French SNEP Singles Chart, before continuing to drop[6]. The song reached #25 in Switzerland on June 27, 2004[7] and #7 in Belgium on July 3, 2004.[8]

[edit] Music and lyrics

"Si demain... (Turn Around)" is a bilingual song, recorded in English and in French. Antonn sings all French verses, while Tyler sings all English passages. When one of them sings the verses, the other repeat "Je tourne en rond" (Tyler)/"Turn around" (Antonn) at the end of each one of these verses. In the chorus, while the first is entirely in French, the second is sung respectively in English by Tyler and in French by Antonn.

[edit] Music video

The video was recorded in Canada. Like the 1983 version, it was filmed in the snow[3].

In that one, Antonn and Tyler sing "Si demain... (Turn Around)" while they are sitting in front of a snowed up chalet. Antonn has a puppy in her arms, while Tyler drinks a cup, undoubtedly of coffee. We learn during the video that Antonn left her boyfriend by writing a split letter to him while he slept, and went away on the roads where Tyler gave a lift to her.

At the end of the video, the two singers play with dogs in snow.

[edit] TV performances

At the beginning of January 2004, Tyler spent 12 days in France in order to promote her duet. She also went to Mauritius[3].

Bonnie Tyler and Kareen Antonn performed the song on several French TV variety broadcasts, for example on Les 101 sosies de stars, on TF1, on April 3, 2004 (on that occasion they received a Platinum Disc) ; on La Chanson de l'année on TF1, on June 1, 2004 ; on Hit Machine, on M6. They performed "Si demain... (Turn Around)" in live with a philharmonic orchestra on Symphonic show on France 3[9].

They also sung this hit at the Nrj Music Tour organized by French multimedia NRJ, at a concert in Bordeaux at the Chaban-Delmas stadium on May 29, 2004 (broadcast on the musical channel M6 Music on June 6 and June 9, and on M6 on June 13)[10], and at La Cigale, a Parisian show hall, on June 8, 2004[11].

[edit] In the medias and other uses

In 2007, Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder, two French professional figure skaters, carried out their performance on "Si demain...(Turn Around) ", in "Stars sur glace", at the Palais omnisports de Paris-Bercy, broadcast on Paris Première[12]. Moreover, the song features on the programme of their 2006-2007 figure skating season[13].

This song was featured briefly in the 2003 film Old School. It was sung by the wedding singer at Will Ferrel's character's wedding reception.

On March 30, 2004, on Worldbest competition which brings together winners of various broadcasts of Star Academy, the two finalists, Wilfred Le Bouthillier and Marie-Élaine Thibert, revealed by the 2003 Star Academy in Canada, performed "Si demain... (Turn Around)"[14], song with which they were ranked second[15]. In 2005, they produced the single under the title "Et si demain" (studio version)[16], sold 1,99$ with the Canadian magazine 7 jours[15]. They performed "Et si demain" on September 18, 2004, in the show "La Fureur" on SRC, and on April 19, 2004 on TVA[17].

In 2004, Lucie and Sandy, two contestants of the French TV show Star Academy 4, covered this song at one of the Friday weekly broadcast[18].

Song of the name "Si demain" by Lorie, on her album Rester la même, is unrelated to Tyler and Antonn's song.

[edit] Chart performances

The single has been listed for 63 weeks in three singles charts based on physical sales, in 3 european countries[19].

France

On French SNEP Singles Chart, the single went to number 25 on December 21, 2003 (highest debut that week)[20]. It reached the top ten two weeks later and became number one in its fifth week. The single has the characteristic to recover the first position on three times during its ten weeks of reign. It remained on the chart until its 25th week, on June 6, 2004.[21]
According to the specialist of French charts Elia Habib, this hit "consecrates the return in pole position of the duets in which the language of Molière and that of Shakespeare intermingle successfully. Such a mixture of trans-manche languages had not approached the top of the sales any more since many years. Very exactly since December 1994, when the duet Youssou N'Dour - Neneh Cherry had yielded its throne, at the end of sixteen weeks of exclusive reign, to Elton John. (...) It is to say if such linguistic conjunction is uncommon at the top of the charts"[22].
In France, "Si demain... (Trun Around)" was the most successful single of 2004 beginning and has the characteristic to be the first - and the only - number-one single recorded by an exclusively female duet, twenty years after French Top 50 creation[23]. It is also the single which made the biggest drop from #1, passing directly from #1 to #10[24] [25].
In 2004, this title allowed Bonnie Tyler to make what was at this time the record of the longest time gap between two successive Top ten singles. Indeed, 18 years were passed between her title "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)" which reached number six in 1986[26] and the first position of "Si demain... (Turn Around)". The previous record, carried out by Marc Lavoine, was 17 years old[27]. According to IFOP, this song was the 4th best selling single in France in 2004, behind "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-Zone, "Femme Like U" by K-Maro and "Obsesión" by Aventura[28].
Platine, a French magazine, asserted that with this duet, "Bonnie Tyler came back at foreground" and said the success of the song particularly went well because in France, there was in 2004 "a certain fashion for the transborder duets"[29].

Other countries and airplays

In Belgium (Wallonia), the song was quickly number one - two weeks after its debut at #21 - and remained #1 from February 21 to April 10, 2004 (eight weeks). It appeared in the top 40 from February 7 to July 17, 2004 (24 weeks).[30] It was the second best-selling single in Belgium in 2004, and totaled 31 weeks on the chart[31]. About the song, Belgian (Wallonia) Chart Website declares : "With Kareen Antonn, the new revelation, Bonnie Tyler could know a real come-back. They regilded some Bonnie's old hits, put a touch of French and bingo ![32]"

In Switzerland, the single peaked at #7 (four weeks), and remained on the chart for 34 weeks.[33]

"Si demain... (Turn Around)" was also broadcast on radio in Russia. Il was a great success in Poland, where it reached #1 on Pif Paf Airplay Chart for three weeks, from 23th to 25th week of 2004[34]. It also remained in the daily Airplay RMF FM Chart from March 17 to June 17, 2004 and was number one for 6 days (on March 22, March 24, April 13, April 19, June 1 and June 14, 2004)[35]. The song was #6 on the 2004 International List of prize of the French-speaking Musics, compiled in collaboration with 122 radios throughout the world.[36]
