Talk:Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
is it worth mentioning in this article that this album collection was originally released as a mail order only release because Frank thought it would only interest his really hard core fans, but the popularity of it caused him to rethink that and put it out in the stores? I wish I could remember where I read that, but I believe it was in his early 80's interview in Guitar World Magazine. --GregoryEvans01 17:39, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
The original Barking Pumpkin release was the three individual albums available only thru mail order (it was actually shipped and distributed from Columbia House headquarters. If you check out the old inner sleeves advertising the album, the address where you sent cash/check/money order to buy the album was Columbia House's famous Terra Haute, Indiana address!). CBS handled Barking Pumpkin releases for Europe and most of the rest of the world, and they had the right to release the album however they wished. It was they who first packaged the three records in a box and sold it in stores. It sold decently as an import item, causing Zappa to repackage the albums in the box for the American retail market (it was also released on cassette, with the three tapes packaged in the same box they used for the LP release. The upper right-hand corner of the LP box had the title and stated "3-Record Box". For the cassette release, they put a similarly styled sticker over that which had the title and read "3-Cassette Box". The boxed cassette release sold very few. The one my dad bought back in the mid-80s is so far the only one I've ever personally seen). Manufactured to Comply 17:17, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Track switching
On the old double CD release, the actual music tracks "Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar" and "Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar Some More" weren't switched, only the printed titles on the cover and in the booklet. Who knows why or how this happened, but two interesting notes...
The chronological order for the dates of the recordings would have "...Some More" first, followed by "Shut Up..", followed by "Return of the Son of..."
in "The Frank Zappa Guitar Book", the transcription for "SUNPYG" matches the recording of "...Some More", while the transcription of "...Some More" matches the performance of "SUNPYG". Weird. Manufactured to Comply 17:20, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wrong Peter Wolf
The Peter Wolf who played keyboard on these recordings (and others by Zappa) is not the US-born singer of the J. Geils Band, but the Austrian-born Composer/Producer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.245.92.72 (talk) 13:27, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
