[edit] Miscellanea
- The inner-edge of the CD case reveals a hidden message: "A Fire Inside". This is a lyric from the album's introductory track. This is the first album to use the phrase 'A Fire Inside'.
- The song "A Single Second" features Nick 13 from the band Tiger Army on vocals during parts of the chorus. Nick 13 has done background vocals on most AFI releases.
- This is the first AFI release with Hunter Burgan playing bass guitar, although he was only temporary at the time.
- As with Very Proud of Ya, future AFI guitarist Jade Puget provided background vocals, making this the first AFI album that the four current members would collaborate.
- The album's track layout is unique in that it contains repeated references to the number 3. Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes is AFI's third album, and three tracks lie between the songs containing variations of the number 3. The use of the number 3 would go on to be a recurring theme in subsequent albums.
