The composition shows the effect of varying shutter speed on night photography. The photographs show Greenwich, London, and the green laser beam emitted by the Greenwich observatory to indicate the Greenwich meridian. The image was taken from the Thames path, facing the observatory from the north-west.

The shutter speed for the images from left to right are 1.3, 2.5, 4, 8 and 15 seconds. A version of the composition with captions added can be found at Image:Shutter speed in Greenwich.jpg.
