Shri Pawahari Balkrishn Yatiji Maharaj is a sage or Guru and his disciples believe he is the incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is known as a Mahamandaleshwar, approximately "great guardian of a temple" and directs the religious establishment known as Hathiyaram math. Pawahari was born in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, a state in northern India. He took his education in the city of Varanasi and Mirjapur. He became a sage at a very young age, and is said to have done Tapasya for 28 Years, consuming only milk, fruits and water, thus becoming known as a Pawahari(a person who takes only milk as his food). He is a scholar of Hindu religious literature such as the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Puranas. Pawahari is said to have done great works to spread education among women and the under privileged, and has opened numerous educational institutions and colleges.
