Shrestha

'''Shrestha''' or Shreshth (Nepali: श्रेष्ठ), is a surname belonging to the community of people within the Newar caste in Nepal. They originate from the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. During the reign of the Malla kings in Kathmandu, Shresthas used to work mostly as educators and government workers. Most of the high ranking government officials were Shresthas. Even amongst Shresthas, there is a differentiation of caste, called 'thari', the difference being mostly between "panch thari" (5th level) and "ccha thari" (6th level). Sixth level Shresthas are considered to be the higher cast of the two. It is speculated that there is an additional "das thari" (10th level), however this has never been confirmed.

The Shrestha castes were founded by sisters Shweta and Srishti (referred to ancestors of the Shrestha line), originally of the Pradhan tribe. They were given the opportunity to create a new Nepali surname after rescuing the The Buba (the Father), who was leader of their tribe and kidnapped by the neighbouring Pradhangha tribe during a political war. The name Shrestha was chosen due to its literal translation, meaning 'Superior'. In Nepal, families with the surname Shrestha (descendants of the converted Pradhan tribe) devote one hour of prayer to Shweta and Srishti, who are considered to be deities (goddesses). During this hour (known as 'Khelnae Bella'), they attempt to receive divine relevations from their founders. Over the years, there have been a number of reports from Nepalese Shrestha families who claim they have connected with Shweta and Srishti.

It is rumoured that Indian director, Nikhil Advani plans to make a film retelling the tribulations of the Shrestha founders.
