From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shrikes are a form taxon, referring to a number of songbirds that are fairly closely related but not a natural group. They are invariably mid-sized songbirds, often quite "brawny", with strong bills and feet. Many are notoriously carnivorous, with the true shrikes (Laniidae) being well-known for their habit of hunting small vertebrates like mice or lizards, which they prop up on thorny shrubs, partly to assist in tearing them apart for feeding, partly to store uneaten food for later use.
