[edit] History
The SHPE student chapter at ASU was founded in 1982 by five Hispanic students who had an interest in belonging to a Hispanic organization. Said students attended a SHPE conference in Los Angeles and this motivated the students to organize a SHPE Student Chapter in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. These students then recruited other Hispanic students to participate and created their own ASU chapter that year.[1]
[edit] CEMSWE
SHPE de ASU works with NSBE, SWE and AISES in an umbrella organization called CEMSWE, the Coalition of Engineering Minority Societies and Society of Women Engineers, to support the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering in their Diversity Recruitment and Retention Programs like MEP.[2]
[edit] Community Service
SHPE de ASU is active in the Hispanic Community in the Maricopa County and is always looking for new ways to help the kids in the Area engage in Engineering activities as well as academics. In February of 2006 the students at Isaac Middle School with the assistance of SHPE de ASU members completed the FIRST Robotics Competition with recognition for the teams hardship. They were given the "Against All Odds" award for being able to compete even though the team had limited support by the school and faculty. [3]
