Hi Shoaler, randomly browsing your talk page just now, I came across this curious entry. I would be very interested to know more about the Giant space magnet of death, and I wonder if wikipedia should contain an article which describes it. Bards 22:54, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Glamorous cumbia

Could you explain your undeletion of Glamorous cumbia? --Pablo D. Flores (Talk) 22:22, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

The article is original research and the term itself appears to be a neologism. Moreover, the user who created it was a hoaxer. I'll see if I can revive the VfD and decide what to do with it, since most of the text is salvageable. --Pablo D. Flores (Talk) 14:34, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your application of the cleanup tag to "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter"

You applied the cleanup tag to the "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" article. That tag displays a message to readers that says:

"To meet Wikipedia's quality standards, this article or section may require cleanup.
See rationale on the talk page, or replace this tag with a more specific message. Editing help is available.

But you didn't start a discussion on the talk page. IMO, that is irresponsible. This is a bee in my bonnet because there was another wikipedian who used to track my edit history, almost like a stalker, and apply all kinds of bogus tags. He wasn't prepared to enter into serious discussions on talk pages, because, I believe, he wanted to abuse the wikipedia to get across his political points. One sign that he wasn't seriously interested in improving the wikipedia was the frequency with which he didn't initiate discussions to solidify the case for applying the tags he used. Alternatively he would boiler-plate in some patent nonsense.

If I am going to challenge his mis-use of tags, I am going to have to question other people, who apply tags, but don't follow through by initiating the discussion. -- Geo Swan 21:00, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:QuincyParishChurch.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:QuincyParishChurch.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 18:03, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] impressive

Yeah, that's totally fine by me. It's just that "5 star" directly implies a rating by one of the major sources like AAA, Mobile or Michelin. It's certainly a notable hotel, if not the most famous nat'l park hotel --its just that to a lot of travellers, 5-star implies a level of luxury that would seem absurd in Yosemite: imagine the Hotel Imperial or Burj al-Arab in a national park ;-) All the best. --Bobak 20:12, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] APL function symbols

"Take" is currently listed as U+2191, but my Unicode (5) tables show this as unassigned... what is this meant to be? porges(talk) 10:32, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not a Unicode expert but the up-arrow shows up at 2191 on [2]. Feel free to fix it though if you think it's wrong. –Shoaler (talk) 13:44, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Ooops, I made a mistake typing that message. The Unicode reference was right but the character actually in the table was U+088F, which is unassigned. I've fixed it now :) porges(talk) 21:30, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation

It seems odd, but the only links on disambiguation pages should be those to the listed articles. I know it seems odd, but their sole purpose is to direct readers to one of those articles, not to impart any information. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages). [edit] Don't forget to subst: templates!

Hi,

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Thanks! :)

[edit] Mars

hi, why is Mars's more correct than Mars'? eg Mars' natural satellites etc.. sbandrews (t) 18:58, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

  • Most current style guides (WP:STYLE, CMS) use an apostrophe-s for all singular words, even those ending in s. There are particular exceptions based on convention (e.g. Jesus'). –Shoaler (talk) 20:03, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
    • sigh, nothing is ever easy, Mars's looks wrong to me, but hey, life goes on :) regards, sbandrews (t) 21:08, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
    • this[3] site says Mars' though, sbandrews (t) 21:23, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
      • Maybe Mars' is one of the exceptions. Do you have a copy of CMS handy (or another reputable style guide)? Mine are in storage right now. –Shoaler (talk) 09:26, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
    • Alas no, how strange for an atheist like me to be arguing for the rights of an ancient God :), I'll revert your changes till you find an answer, if that's ok, they'll be harder to correct later... sbandrews (t) 13:32, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Veirs Mill Road

To save you from mistake in the future, I am notifying you that the road which carries MD 28 for about a block in Rockville, MD is an exception to the "i before e" rule. It is spelled Veirs Mill, not Viers Mill. It is a common mistake, but try to resist your second-grade teacher when commenting on it. Thank you. --RockRNC 01:19, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your edification. It has been many years since I left Montgomery County and, alas, my 2nd grade teacher must be well over 100 by now. –Shoaler (talk) 21:17, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:SomeoneLikeYouDahl.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:SomeoneLikeYouDahl.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 12:05, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
