Talk:Shoutbox
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm curious: What are some popular websites that run shoutboxes? --Unforgettableid | Talk to me 19:03, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- One example of popular site is deviantART.com. There are not many corporate sites running shoutboxes. --Snecx 09:32, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure if this counts as spam, but for this article I would think it would be handy to be able to click a few links to see examples. Since this is a new area for me, I would not think of it as spam or a directory listing
Also to if someone could explain the subtle difference between the various terms would be handy. --Synapse001 13:35, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
I've got a few examples of sites that let you get your own shoutbox free: [1] [2] [3] [4]

[edit] Last half of article removed
Private messages are nowhere near the same as a shoutbox — PMs are more like e-mail, and shoutboxes are like IRC chats. Examples are also generally a bad idea; tons of Web sites use shoutboxes, so why are these six special? I've removed these two parts, and added a "See also" instead. æle ✆ 14:21, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Spam?
The one and only link to the shoutbox hosting site has been removed from the article. It is unfair to include just a single site URL to the article because there are various shoutbox hosting services out there and this is not even one of the most commonly used ones. It seems more like a spam than useful link.

[edit] Advantages?
What for does a corporate intranet need a shoutbox? Only for drawing attention?
- Whether it is on intranet or internet, shoutboxes are being used by class teachers and lecturers to assist their students via online discussion sessions. In this case, shoutbox does the job well because they provide the interactivity level close to a live chat system but they are light weight and web based. If a corporate intranet find uses of it, they shall benefit from the tool. Else, they should not install it in the first place. Shoutbox is just another tool, nobody say it is a must to use it. --Snecx 09:32, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- It is also good for community building. E.g. in an educational context, students who work on some platform can say hi to each other and "feel present" ("Being there" is a crucial feature in distance teaching). In addition, one can use it to make short and informal announcements or ask quick questions.
[edit] Is there a shoutbox for Wikimedia servers ?
- I know I could install a anonymous one, but only want registered users to talk.... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.194.8.73 (talk) 09:38, 13 January 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Shoutbox - Web chat?
What's the difference between a web chat of 1995 and a shoutbox of 2001? How come the shoutbox isn't considered a web chat system among all the other web chat systems? /192.121.234.65 11:26, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
