[edit] Penal

I did some research on the derivation on Spike Island, but google is no substitution for local knowledge. Nevertheless, I cannot find any substantiation for that it is named after the penal colony or a negative association with gypsies. What I did substantiate is that a one-time vast military hospital at Netley, on the eastern edge of Southampton was named or nicknamed called Spike Island. See e.g., [1], I suspect this is hogwash and the name derives from the hospital.--Fuhghettaboutit 03:08, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spike Island and gypsies

In Sholing the Spike Island pub is nearby a community of gypsy. It is a common site to see a horse and trap on the roads around Sholing and one's gypsy's have been here for a few years I don't know about Spike Island apart from a good drinking pub but I do know there is a gypsy story in Sholing, it's there somewhere...you know where Mush!

[edit] Merge

I am against the proposed merge of articles suggested it would cause a loss of information in many cases and an overloading of the main page. Notably a similar set of proposals was made by an anonymous user to disrupt the Portsmouth page and those of its schools information is here and also here -- Drappel 21:57, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
