The history THE SHOCKING BLUE has connected with its leader and founder Robbie van Leeuwen [born on October 29, 1944 in Hague]. In first half of 60-s, Robbie has seriously gone deep into musical researches, under influence of the British rock. And better place for this purpose, than group MOTIONS on that moment in Holland was simply impossible to find [before the MOTIONS Robbie was in RICOCHETS and ATMOSPHERES]. The majority of the Dutch groups of first half of the 60-s, such as JOHNNY KENDALL AND THE HERALDS, ZZ AND THE MASKERS, THE HUNTERS and even GOLDEN EARRINGS has been performing beat-rock, and little part of the Dutch bands, among which was MOTIONS, have cut a rhythm-and-blues, in this case in spirit of British mods. However, Robbie has left the MOTIONS in 1967, because of the conflict with singer of the band - Rudy Bennett. Moreover, he has decided to realize own ideas in own project. The first band on this way was SIX YOUNG RIDERS. Here together with van Leeuwen played Henk Smitskamp and Rene Nodelijk. This group has a short lifetime and in same 1967, Robbie van Leeuwen has collected the new musicians: singer Fred De Wilde [ex. HU & HILLTOPS], bassist Klaasje van der Wal and drummer Cornelis van der Beek [ex. SECT, in some sources his name has written as Cornelius, and more often - simply Cor]. An idea to name group THE SHOCKING BLUE was inspired to Robbie van Leeuwen by legendary Eric Clapton’s song Electric Blue. In this period, the changes in shape of the Dutch rock-scene have begun. GOLDEN EARRING has left the beat-rock and move into the stream of blues-, and later hard-rock, bands CUBY & THE BLIZZARDS and Q 65 have begun to get wide popularity, were founded a lot of greatest Dutch bands, such as LIVIN' BLUES, EKSEPTION, BRAINBOX. The main events of Dutch rock-life acted in Hague – the home town of THE SHOCKING BLUE. Here it is necessary to notice, that in some years critics will call Hague ”Dutch Liverpool” and ”European San Francisco”. The recording sessions for the first album Beat With Us (released in 1968) were finished in 1967. It was still in mod-rhythm-and-blues stream and reminds the early music of the British groups THE WHO and SMALL FACES, it seems, that for those years it was natural. However, it was not yet that kind of music, which Robbie van Leeuwen wanted to play, because he directed the sights to San Francisco. Moreover, there were many new groups – THE GRATEFUL DEAD, QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE, MOBY GRAPE, COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH and especially JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. Their musical direction Robbie has chosen for his group. They recorded only one new single Lucy Brown Is Back In Town/Fix Your Hair Darling, sustained in traditions of MOVE, FLOWERPOT MEN and TOMORROW In 1968. However, the basic event of year, that has changed the course of a history of group - has become a leaving of Fred De Wilde. He had problems with his military service. Fred under pressure of the “military machine” has parted with group. Robbie van Leeuwen for a long time wanted a band with female vocal. The manager of THE SHOCKING BLUE Cees van Leeuwen has found a young girl-singer Mariska Veres (born 1949) at the party in honor of the GOLDEN EARRING’s first hit № 1 (earlier he had seen her at jazz festival in Loosdrecht). Mariska Veres a new singer of group has been working with BLUE FIGHTERS, DANNY & FAVOURITES, MOTOWNS, MYSTERES and BUMBLE BEES. With changes in structure the new style has come: melodic courses in the best traditions of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, powerful THE ROLLING STONES-like rhythm-section and Mariska’s voice that could compete with famous singers Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. It is necessary to tell, that the new singer of THE SHOCKING BLUE was a very picturesque figure: her mother is German and father is Hungarian gypsy, she has embodied in the appearance and vote all better qualities of these nations. In 1969, there was an album At Home, which musicians of the band count their discography. On this album, Robbie van Leeuwen for the first time has used sitar. The greatest success has found a single with a song of this album, Venus - in February, 1970 it triumphal has rushed on the top of the charts in England, USA and many European countries. It was the serious application for success, but, unfortunately, the triumph of this song has rendered a bad service for THE SHOCKING BLUE. A lot of people have begun to consider them as the “One hit wonders”, though they deserved, undoubtedly, greater. THE SHOCKING BLUE made their next LP Scorpio's Dance in 1970, which due to the same named two-piece composition, taking place in different places of the album; it is possible to name “quasiconceptual”. The firm sound of group has covered the widest stylistic range: hard-rock riffs of Send Me a Postcard, psychedelic blues – California Here I Come, Deamon Lover and folk-psychedelic I Love Voodoo Music – for example. In January 1971, THE SHOCKING BLUE has begun to record a new album. Into the band has come a new musician - the second guitarist Leo van der Kettery. The Third Album was released in March of 1971 become an original masterpiece of the European version of ”West Coast Rock”. The musicians of THE SHOCKING BLUE had not any attitude to a cult of drugs, rule in those times. It, certainly, did not go on advantage to image, but THE SHOCKING BLUE, as well as Ted Nugent, Mike Pinera, or the musicians of JETHRO TULL, had more forces and time for their music, instead of stupid things. After release of the new album both Klaasje van der Wal [to ANTILOPE] and Leo van der Kettery [to MINISINK TOWNHOUSE, L & C BAND] has left the band. Henk Smitskamp old friend of the group has occupied their place (he was former bassist of WILLY AND GIANTS, MOTIONS, SANDY COAST, SIX YOUNG RIDERS and LIVIN' BLUES). He has given to group a new charge of creative energy, which in 1972 materialized in two new studio albums Inkpot and Attila and one live - The Shocking Blue Live In Japan. This live LP perfectly shows the work of group without studio things. To this moment THE SHOCKING BLUE have visited actually all civilized world, beginning of Europe and USA, finishing such places as Hon-Kong, Japan, Indonesia and countries of Southern America. In USA, for example, THE SHOCKING BLUE acted in one packet with stars of the first size - SLY & THE FAMILY STONE and THREE DOG NIGHT. In 1973 have been released a next album Dream On Dreamer, with more folk-rock sound. Moreover, in the same time THE SHOCKING BLUE has found a first big problem: critics ‘break off’ a new single Let Me Carry Your Bag. Inside of the group, a pressure has increased: Robbie van Leeuwen was author of all material - four albums for 1,5 years, many singles, numerous performances, plus, pressure from the recording label... At last, he has fucked out, and left the band. In 1974, Martin van Wijk known by the work in two Dutch groups took up his place: FAIRY TALE and JUPITER. Very quickly, he has become a new leader of THE SHOCKING BLUE and the new material already was result of his work. It is necessary to tell that Martin successfully has brought to music of THE SHOCKING BLUE some elements of glam rock and funk that materialized on the new album Good Times. The process of disintegration that has begun with leaving of founder of group was impossible to stop. In 1974 Mariska Veres has began solo career, Henk Smitskamp went to LIVIN' BLUES, and Cor van der Beek with Martin van Wijk have conceived the project LEMMING. Later Cor was asked by Smitskamp to join LIVIN' BLUES and it is necessary to notice, that this group has found it’s best rhythm-section of all times. After work with LIVIN' BLUES, Cor has moved into HEADLINE. After leaving the LEMMING Martin van Wijk has become a member of UDELL’S PEOPLE. The last single Gonna Sing My Song has released in 1975 that was a last word in the history of the classic period of THE SHOCKING BLUE. Robbie van Leeuwen has started new experimental group GALAXY LIN, which was oriented on folk, jazz and psychedelic rock. The next stop in his career was the studio project MISTRAL (the end of 70-s), where in 1978 has appeared Mariska Veres. In 1984 THE SHOCKING BLUE were going to act on the Back-To-the-Sixties-Festival in Den Bosch, together with Q 65 and other less known Dutch groups. THE SHOCKING BLUE together with own old hits have cut two legendary numbers: Somebody To Love and White Rabbit – the best-known hits of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. In two years, musicians have released new single Jury And the Judge/I'm Hanging On To Love. Then the group has gone from horizon, Robbie has departed himself from musical businesses, and went from Hague to Luxembourg. Mariska Veres has renewed musical activity in the beginning of 90-s in a jazz-rock way with the group MARISKA VERES SHOCKING JAZZ QUINTET. Within four days from November 10 until November 13, 1992, the musicians have recorded an album, which has released in the beginning of 1993. There are an old hits of the THE SHOCKING BLUE, conveniently have settled down with covers of GOLDEN EARRING, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, THE ZOMBIES, THE KINKS in this album. Inspired with own good luck, in 1993 Mariska has secured by bless of Robbie van Leeuwen and has collected new version THE SHOCKING BLUE. She has gathered a good musicians: guitarist Andre van Geldorp, keyboardist Michael Eschauzier [ex. SFINX, CATAPULT], Bert Meulink on the bass (ex. MARISKA VERES SHOCKING JAZZ QUINTET) and on drums Gerben de Bruijn. The group actively acts in Europe, especial success their concerts has in Germany, England and Belgium, and certainly in Holland. There were some changes in the line-up: in 1994 has appeared new bass-player Paul Heppener [ex. CONFRONTATION, COBRA, CENTAUR, FONTESSA, THE OTGER DICE BAND]. Moreover, in four years there were changes with drummers: since April until November of 1998, this place divided Jeff van Veen and Michael Schreuder, but finally there stayed only Schreuder. THE SHOCKING BLUE has done some new material – a single Body And Soul/Angel (1994). Robbie van Leeuwen has decided to remember old time and join the group, but only as producer. By 1997, the German label Repertoire has reissued studio albums of 1969-74, but behind a board, there were the first and concert albums of group. Partly this hole was filled by the compilation Singles A's and B's. It is unique collection of group, in which on 2 CD-s have submitted all legendary singles of group, which from 1967 until 1994 were 23, plus 1 promo-single. Now THE SHOCKING BLUE has remembered as the musicians who have recorded the song Venus. I think, it unfair, you see, their music is excellent, the musicians perfectly played their instruments, and the voice of the singer is simply greatest. Probably, reason of this sad situation is geography of group - THE SHOCKING BLUE has appeared in the country, where such kind of music was not habitual. There were many musical styles in Holland: beat -, blues -, hard- and even art-rock, but ” West coast rock” was performed only by the one group! If THE SHOCKING BLUE would appear somewhere in California, probably, the generation of Woodstock would have one more hero. In any case THE SHOCKING BLUE is worthy of the most sincere respect, as well as many of the undeserved forgotten heroes of those years! – Pavel Grechanovsky.
