Shorapur is located at 16.52° N 76.75° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 472 metres (1548 feet). Earliar it was known as surpur.

As of 2001 India census[2], Shorapur had a population of 43,591. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shorapur has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 65%, and female literacy is 46%. In Shorapur, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.
