Shopping in Townsville

Local shopping experience includes the markets, with a night market conducted on the first Friday of each month at The Strand Park on the foreshore. Weekly markets (Cotters Markets) are held on Sunday mornings in the Flinders Street Mall in the city centre, with a variety of offerings including fresh produce, foods, arts and craft and other antiquities.
Domain Central is now Australia's largest homemaker centre.[1]

[edit] Department store for Townsville
David Jones, at that time the only major department store in Townsville, closed in 1993. A survey [2] found that the closure decreased the attractiveness of Townsville's shopping experience and opportunities. The closest major department store is Myer in Cairns 350km away.
On July 23rd, Myer has said that a new Townsville store will be opened at the Stockland Townsville shopping centre on Ross River Road, Aitkenvale, by 2009.[3]
In December 2006 David Jones indicated that it did not consider Townsville to be within its 3 year plan, but that this will be reviewed in 2008.[4]
Residents in Townsville are Myer's biggest catalogue buyers.[5]
