[edit] 56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot

Hi, I just reviewed this article you have been working on for GA and I'm afraid I had to fail it as it simply isn't cited well enough. I have left a full review on the talk page, but I wanted to say that I do like what you have done with the article so far and all the best for continuing the good work.--Jackyd101 23:25, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image licenses

Sorry about the bad licensing job I did on the images I uploaded, I have read a lot about copyright and now have a much better Idea of the right way to licenses Images, I do not have as much time for Wikipedia now that school is out for me, but This week I will try and go back and fix the Images. Do not want to get Wikipedia in trouble. Thanks Max ╦╩ 00:53, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Waterfowl

For some reason I can't edit your Ducks question on the Reference Desk (whatever I do, it keeps taking me to random other parts of the page), so I've come here instead - hope you don't mind.

I had a look at your other photos and I'm even more sure now that this is a young moorhen. For a little while, I was half-wondering if it might be a young spotted crake, but that would be markedly smaller than a moorhen and would probably be showing more distinctly barred plumage. If it had been, you'd be pretty lucky as they're rare in Britain.

I can't explain the size differences with certainty, but I'd be inclined to think that it's because the downy plumage is much thicker and fluffier than the adult feathers. A lot of birds have juveniles which appear larger than the adults for this reason - they're bulkier because of their feathers even though they're not fully grown. Moorhens are roughly pigeon-sized, which looks about right from these photos. Thanks for coming back with more pictures; the more views, the more chance of an accurate ID. I hope I've been a bit of help - if you like, drop me a line on my talk page next time you leave a question like this on the refdesk; I don't check it all that often and it's easy to miss things. All the best, --YFB ¿ 00:22, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dunedin (ship)

FYI Posted following on article talk page: -

"Am responsible for the SS - I do not claim to be an expert on shipping, although I suspect things are not quite as straight forward as may at first be thought. I copied SS with reservations but uncertain of boundaries of the use from primary reference: A lasting Legacy — A 125 year history of New Zealand Farming since the first Frozen Meat Shipment, Ed. Colin Williscroft PMP, NZ Rural Press Limited, Auckland, 2007. This had more material about the ship than other sources, and authors had first hand experience of the (modern) shipping industry. I note a breif google search for SS Dunedin turns up a number of pages which name the ship as SS Dunedin. (http://www.meatnz.co.nz/main.cfm?id=105&lid=8, http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU0705/S00479.htm, http://www.foodweek.com.au/main-features-page.aspx?articleType=ArticleView&articleId=179, for example) However 'SS' was not used in the two other references I sued to cross check facts, which were written by historians rather than sailors. I note the vessel had a steam engine on board - for the compressor - but to the best of my knowledge this could never be used to propel her. Winstonwolfe 00:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)"

Hello,

I noticed that you have deleted my article titled "4th AKKA WKC 2006". Appreciate if you could let me know the reason. I still not able to figure out what policy it could have violated. AKKA is a 501(c)3 organization and the article about it is a tribute to hundreds of volunteers who worked tirelessly to conduct one of the greatest conferences in US. I sincerely hope that the article will be put back in its original form.

Thanks for uploading Image:Replace this image female.svg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. [edit] Could you clarify whether your comment was KEEP at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Plot of Les Misérables

Hi Shingray,

I thought you made a sound point in your comment at the deletion discussion. If you want that comment considered as a "!vote" it would help to put Keep (or possibly something else) at the beginning of it because the closing administrator, especially faced with such a huge deletion discussion, is likely to miss it. Although !votes aren't decided on a majority basis, it still helps to clarify. Please consider making your comment clearer for the harried administrator faced with the daunting task of reading through that discussion. Thanks! Noroton 05:47, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lindsay Ashford

Just thought you might want to know, as you seemed appalled by the state of his bio, that the entry is probably partially autobiographical. Some comments in the first AfD for this entry seem to support this.[1] He appears to be regarded by many as a spokesperson for the current Pro-pedophile activism movement, and to be known to and/or admired by some other current or former Wikipedia editors. Deletion of the unsourced information is still the right thing to do, and it is good that it was reported and fixed. -Jmh123 06:32, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your opinion welcome at deletion review for Plot of Les Mis

After Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Plot of Les Misérables closed as a deletion, I'm challenging the way the closing administrator acted as in violation of Wikipedia rules. Your participation is welcome at that discussion, Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2007 July 14. A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Richard Gooch, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. You're the uploader of Image:Replace this image male.svg and its female counterpart. Is there any chance you could create a third, generic one for objects, buildings, animals and so on? 81.157.31.61 01:29, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

If you give me a SVG (or even just a PNG) file, sure, I can get the mechanical process working. However, I don't have the capacity to create the images; all those were uploaded by me from work by others, so I'd need that step done by someone else. Shimgray | talk | 01:33, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Who created the current ones? 81.157.31.61 01:35, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Editor at Large did female, I think, but who originally did male is lost in the mists of time (possibly Geni?). image1, the neuter, was Vystrix Nexoth. There's also Image:Replace this imageb.svg - buildings - which was Geni. Shimgray | talk | 01:40, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I've gone to Geni. Also, these placeholders really should be categorised. I would do it myself but can't create the category. (Category:Free image placeholders?) 81.157.31.61 01:52, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes it results in the images haveing the wrong template on them. You will also find that the building image does not go to the same place as the people images. I've started fixing it but you need to move User:Geni/fogen to MediaWiki:Uploadtext/fogen and User:Geni/fogenl to MediaWiki:Licenses/fogen. [edit] Disambiguous 103rd Regiment of Foot

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on 103rd Regiment of Foot, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because 103rd Regiment of Foot is a disambiguation page that only points to a single article, or no articles at all.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting 103rd Regiment of Foot, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Joy Christian; Disproof

Thanks Shimgray, that seems perfectly reasonable. I'm just put out because it means we'll need to find a new format for our assessment on this. Thanks also for emailing me the content from the page, that will come in handy.

ASCWiki —Preceding comment was added at 00:55, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it was suggested by our mentor. Traditionally for these sorts of independent research projects (they're associated with our degree) the assessment is by a short formal report, but our mentor felt that since we were putting so much work into it should be accessible by other interested people. Because its an independent project though we set the terms of the assessment so we should be able to change it (even at this late date).

We shouldn't need any more substantial proof that the article was briefly a page, thankyou anyway though.

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:NSS logo.png

Thank you for uploading Image:NSS logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 14:54, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Looking for Wikipedians for a User Study

Hello. I am a graduate student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. We are conducting research on ways to engage content experts on Wikipedia. Previously, Wikipedia started the Adopt-a-User program to allow new users to get to know seasoned Wikipedia editors. We are interested in learning more about how this type of relationship works. Based on your editing record on Wikipedia, we thought you might be interested in participating. If chosen to participate, you will be compensated for your time. [edit] Image:Replace this image female.svg‎

Hi. I wonder if I can ask why you protected [[Image:Replace this image female.svg‎]]? It seems many editors find it ugly and obtrusive and I've been trying to find out the background to the controversy. Thanks and regards. --Kleinzach (talk) 05:30, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of "Durham Revue" article

Searching the deletion log I thought MZMcBride had deleted this article in Aug 07 but in going on to re-edit/re-create the page, it suggests you did on 16 May 07 for "Redirecting to a deleted article". I know one (external) link on the page was dead (a temporary server issue) but hadn't realised internal wiki links had died (if so sorry, but there was *nothing* controversial in the rest of the page's valid contents). I haven't checked on it till now to find it removed! Can you reinstate my page please? Many thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Roddypeters (talkcontribs) 15:09, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template:WikiProject Business & Economics

Hi, the above template has been fully-protected by you. I believe the protection wasn't necessary; not only it hasn't gone through any vandalisms, but the template is for the talk namespace, which isn't an usual target for vandalism. The template needs some updates, and I wish if it could be unprotected. Or, should I request for edit using {{editprotected}}? Please reply here. Thank you! eDenE 05:38, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Editprotected is probably your best bet - because these are so widely used (and thus vulnerable), and because normal editing to them is so rare, it seems best to leave it protected. Shimgray | talk | 23:15, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dead links

Hi, Thanks for trying to wikify the bttn. information on the 8th Armored Division article, but there was no article on the TD Bttn so you've created a dead link. Std. style sheets advise against creating 'dead' wiki-links.--Lepeu1999 (talk) 13:48, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Apologies. I was under the impression you were supposed to create the article first.--Lepeu1999 (talk) 18:58, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 70th Tank Battalion

Hi Andrew. I was not aware you have been on Wiki for so long, but the issue with references is a pertinent one. Essentially whatever you write needs to be largely attributable to some reputable source. A website that refers no one in particular is at best an external link. You will have a problem with the 818th Tank destroyer because there are hardly nay records of it left as one of the web pages you used says.--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 12:27, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Andrew, I take little notice of MOS now because it changes daily in some policies and guidelines. What I know is that there is little point in using wikipedia if I can find the material myself. While most people who use wikipedia generally do not have the patience to look for better sources, I think that editorialship kind of comes with the "extra effort required" tag :) I'm not obligating you to anything, but there are lots of resources for finding good references online; a far cry from the days before internet when I had to go to four different libraries and wait weeks to get my book from interstate. In the case of the 70th you have the entire unit history for WWII online, and can probably find more; certainly for the 1st bn since Germany is well covered. Personally I do not consider any stub to be a proper article until it has at least three published sources listed, which is why there is a template for single source articles--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 12:59, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
