Addowall is an artist community that revolves around an interactive online wall. On Addowall, anyone can get an “addo”—a free piece of the wall—to display any art they wish. In fact, Addowall is actually a comprehensive collection of many, interconnected walls, with a separate wall for each genre/art form.

The Addowall platform allows the artist to upload an image or draw one using aPaint, its online paint program. An addo also displays information about the artist, including as their name, location and website link. This allows other users who like the addo to be easily directed to the artist’s website to view their other work.

The position of an addo on the wall depends on its popularity. If artists like a certain addo, they have the option to “prop” it, which pushes it higher on the wall. Conversely, if they specifically do not like the addo—say, if they find it offensive, unappealing or bland—they can also “drop” the addo, causing it to descend the wall. (A special algorithm calculates the addo’s position on the wall by levelling its recent popularity with its past popularity.) In this way, Addowall becomes a communal project where everyone can submit their work but only the best and most meaningful rise to the top.

[edit] History

Addowall's founders, Raphael Law and Daniel Shiner, were introduced while attending McGill University in Montreal, Canada in late 2006.

After being inspired by a graffiti-filled bathroom stall, Shiner approached Law with the idea of an online "wall" to which the world could contribute but only the worthy would remain.

The website began as a standard social news site. Over time, after discussion with members of the art community, the idea evolved away from a social news format and into a strictly artist community.

Interestingly, this progression is portrayed in the evolution of the site's logo; as illustrated, the logo evolved from a gradient-oriented "Web 2.0" style to a more serious, artistic style.

[edit] Etymology

The name Addowall comes from the latin prefix "addo", which has four meanings: to add, to associate, to unite, to inspire.
