Identity
Shimei (使命) is Japanese for "mission", often in the sense of a purpose in life. The meaning is similar to raison d'etre, if you're into French.
I am Japanese by nationality and ethnicity, but I currently reside in Canada where I am studying Computer Science at the University of British Columbia.
In my field of study, I am particularly interested in theoretical branches such as type theory, information theory, and mathematical logic. However, I am also a tinkerer at heart and enjoy working with electronics and system programming. On the practical side, the programming languages I am most familiar with are C, Haskell, and Scheme. I have participated in the Google Summer of Code program for Haskell.org.
I am also an avid anime viewer. Most of my contributions to Wikipedia have been on anime articles so far (such as on Shuffle! or My-Otome). Drop me a note if you like anime too (especially if you want help on an article or somesuch).
Currently watching
- Hayate no Gotoku
- CLANNAD
- Gundam 00
- Patlabor (a classic of the mecha genre)
I may be willing to do some translating of Japanese articles to English as well.
Role Models
- Richard Feynman (I'd definitely go to Caltech if he were still around...)
- Lawrence Lessig
- Richard Stallman
