Talk:Shisha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This has been functioning as an advert for a company named Opetec. It described their product as "open source" while they say on their website that they are "unwilling to reveal the true features" for now, unless you happen to be a serious investor! The product is evidently vaporware at the moment so shouldn't be mentioned here, at least until it becomes a reality.

[edit] What is sheisha really?

This is a quote from the hookah article:

"[sheisha is] a synonym for hookah, water pipe, or narghile. The word comes from the Persian word for glass. The term “sheisha” is primarily used for water pipes in Egypt. Misinformed Westerners tend to mis-spell "sheisha" and refer to the tobacco smoked from a water pipe as "shisha""

Why then does this article just say that it is just the tobacco, without even mentionning other uses of the word? Someone should fix this contradiction, either by correcting the summary in the hookah article or by explaining the uses of the term "sheisha" better in the introduction to this article.

Another contradiction that I found is that this article mentions that the word sheisha comes from the "Arabic term for a water pipe", not the "Persian word for glass". Which one of these etymologies is correct?

Also, what the hell is a "double voiceless postalveolar fricative"? IronChris | (talk) 20:16, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Here some clarification from a Hookah smoke

A Hookah, A Narghile, A Sheisha(Also can be spelled Shisha), and A Hubbly Bubbly are all the same thing, they are a type of water pipe designed to smoke flavored tobbaco called Shisha. And yes A Shisha can be used to smoke shisha

[edit] Style Guide

This article looks like a little kid wrote it. Someone who knows something about the subject and can understand what the original author is trying to get at, please fix punctuation and grammar and take out irrelevant information. The same goes for the hookah article. CBecker 11:23, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I agree; the article is very poorly written and uses collquialisms and a general tone and style that isn't suitable for an encyclopeda. As a result, the article is very hard to understand and I have put up the appropriate banners on the top of the page.

Edited the last section which previously only referenced one article; it now makes mention of elven and provides a more balanced perspective on the tobacco versus Shisha debate. Will update the references section to match later. - Zeek

[edit] Sheisha: pipe or tobacco?

I've changed the header so that the word can refer to both, but a definite answer on this would help. If Shisha means the pipe, then the article ought to be merged with hookah, for which it would be a synonym. If it means the tobacco itself, then maybe we need a Shisha (tobacco) article with a disambiguation line that states "This article is about the tobacco. For the pipe, see hookah", or similar. Sheisha it the style of tabacco used not a Hookah.

[edit] MAASSEL NOT SHISHA

the origin name is Maassel not Shisha.

Shisha is the water pipe and Maasel is the matter you put in the Shisha. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.148.49.197 (talk) 11:44, 26 April 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Vandalism

I've been reverting what i consider to be a vandal, but it could look like a content dispute, and i don't want to get into a whole edit war thing. Vandalism appears to be POV driven. Someone with an interest and knowledge of this subject should keep an eye on this article.--barneca (talk) 15:50, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Health effects

Theres some painfully bad science in this article. I suggest any editor making contributions to the health effects section makes sure they fully understand the health effects of smoking. Any prolonged exposure to smoke is hazardous for health and so herbal shisha is no different in that respect to normal cigarette smoking, on this matter the article must be clear. At the moment it seems to strongly suggest shisha is a safe form of smoking. This analysis is purely ficitious. Secondly nicotine is NOT a carcinogen. It does not cause cancer, but it is addicitive. Studies have suggested that it MIGHT provide an environment which is useful for cancers but this is very qualitative work and there is no reason to believe it causes cancers. There are however about 50-60 chemicals in a normal cigarette that cause detrimental health effects including some carcinogens. So its POSSIBLE (Not definitive) that shisha is safer, but no studies have conclusive shown otherwise. WikipedianProlific(Talk) 17:40, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Shisha has a zero tar percentage and .05% nicotine per 250g tub. One is not to inhale the smoke from a hookah pipe which will greatly reduce the negative health effects, if any. I smoke hookah on a fairly regular basis and I'm still alive. Fancy that.

I have one relative who's smoked every day since she was 16, lasy month was her 94th, she doesnt even have a cough. Likewise though people die at 50 from smoking related illnesses. Smoking is a statistical probability, if you inhale smoke, particularly with the chemicals in a cigarette you drastically increase your chances of contracting one of those health problems. The mouth and nose are connected by a series of tubules in the tissue of the face called the sinuses and also by a more major tract. One doesn't have to inhale smoke through the nose for it to be a problem. Shisha is often marketed as being 100% safe, but i'm sorry to say thats purely fictious, there is nothing '100% safe' about it. It can also enter via the mouth. The main problem with smoke is that it contains free radicals which have just been created by combustion. Free radicals can damage cells and particularly damage DNA. This leads to mutations which cause cancerous out of control growth of the cell, because parts of its DNA that were supposed to regulate growth have become damaged due to the free radicals in the smoke.WikipedianProlific(Talk) 09:31, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Christ, that health effects section is messed up. For example, it can't seem to agree whether it contains tar or not. Could someone edit it so it makes a little more sense?

I tried shisha for the first time the other day and it occurred to me that I was not inhaling actual smoke, but rather flavored steam. It seemed to me that nothing was actually burning, but that instead air was being heated, flavored and then saturated in the inhalation process. The taste and feel reminded me of being in a nicely flavored sauna. Flavored steam does not strike me as particularly harmful. Please explain or clariy my confusion if possible.

Thanks

[edit] Merge with hookah

Anyone of the knowledgeable editors want to fuse the "unique" portions of this article with the "unique" portions of the hookah article? They're just two names for the same thing, so it's odd that the articles have existed separately for so long whiteout anyone noticing. Or is there another reason?
