Shizuka Kawai (川井 静香 Kawai Shizuka?), known in the English anime as Serenity Wheeler, is a character in the manga Yu-Gi-Oh!, and both Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series. In the first series anime, she is Shizuka Jonouchi (城之内静香 Jōnouchi Shizuka?)[1]. "Shizuka" is Japanese for "quiet" or "serene," hence "Serenity."

[edit] Anime
In Toei's Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, which was not released outside of Japan, Shizuka is simply ill (rather than going blind), and Dr. Kekeru Goyu, who is supposed to be caring for her, is slacking off, causing Nurse Miyuki Sakurai to get angry at him. After he fires Miyuki for hitting him, Dark Yugi (Yami Yugi) defeats Dr. Goyu in a shadow game.
In the manga and the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime (known in Asia as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters), she is going blind. Her brother Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) enters the Duelist Kingdom Tournament in order to gain the prize of three million dollars so she can undergo eye surgery. Yugi Mutou (Yugi Muto) wins the tournament and gives Jonouchi the money to finance the surgery.
In Battle City, villain Marik Ishtar brainwashes Jonouchi to turn against Yugi and ultimately attempts to pull both of them into the sea. Shizuka dives into the sea to rescue her brother from drowning.
In the virtual reality arc of the second season, Shizuka, along with Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor) and Ryuji Otogi (Duke Devlin), duel against the fourth member of Kaiba Corp's Big Five. This member assumes the form of Mechanical Commander, and later Perfect Machine King. During the duel, Shizuka employs a deck consisting of female monsters, such as Saint Joan and the Forgiving Maiden.
In the Kaiba GC arc, Ryuji Otogi (Duke Devlin) says he has a date with her.
Her last appearance was at the end of episode 224 in the Japanese version, where she is seen greeting Yugi and the gang at the airport along with Rebecca and professor Arthur Hopkins (Hawkins in the English version).
[edit] Relations to other characters
Because of divorce, Shizuka and Jonouchi were separated at a young age. Their father took Jonouchi and their mother took Shizuka. However, they love each other very much, and Shizuka always cheers for Jonouchi in his duels. Shizuka refers to Jonouchi by his given name, Katsuya.
Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor) and Ryuji Otogi (Duke Devlin) also develop a crush on Shizuka in the second series anime. She considers them both as her friends.
[edit] Deck
Shizuka's deck is comprised mostly of fairy monsters and female monsters. She only duels once during the course of the second series anime.
