Project 17 Shivalik Class Frigates is the first class of stealth warships being made in India.[2] The Indian Cabinet approved the construction of three stealth ships in 1997. The Shivalik class of ships will be the main frigates of the Indian Navy in the first half of the 21st century. It is reported that a total of twelve ships will be built in varied batches.

[edit] History
The Shivalik class ship has been designed by the Directorate of Naval Design of the Indian Navy.[3] Three ships are being built at the Mazagaon dock in Mumbai. The main feature of these frigate are its stealth features and the land attack capability. The ship is designed for structural, thermal and acoustic stealth.[4] These frigates will be armed with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. These ships wlll have 10 gigabit LAN connection.[5] The first ship of the class INS Shivalik has been handed over to the Indian Navy for sea trials and the ship is expected to be commissioned into service by June 2008. All the ships in the class will be inducted into the Indian Navy by the year 2009.
The first ship INS Shivalik was launched on April 19, 2003. Shivalik is a mountain range in the Himalayas that extends 2500 km. The crest of the ship INS Shivalik shows the Shivalik range and the Ramadao sword. The follow on ships are the INS Sahyadri and the INS Satpura.[6]
Fire Control Systems (FCS) developed by DRDO and built by BEL will be used on the Shivalik class frigates. The indigenous production of the FCS has helped reduce the cost of the system by 1/7th of an imported system.[7]
