Shiremoor

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shiremoor (originally called Tynemouthshire Moor) is a place in North Tyneside. It is served by Shiremoor Metro station, which opened in 1980. Before the railway was converted to form the metro, there was no station at Shiremoor, but there was one instead at Backworth station, some distance from Backworth village.

Shiremoor is not historically a centre of population but many housing estates were built there in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The parish church of Shiremoor is St. Mark's. It is situated just off the main road (Park Avenue) on Brenkley Avenue. The church has a website with information about many of the goings on.

There is currently only one school in Shiremoor, Shiremoor Primary School. It caters for local children aged between 4-11. Until recent years Shiremoor also had a Middle School, but due to both the age of the building and the changing educational system in the area the School was closed in September 2000.
