Soul Collectors(Shinidamachū) (死魂虫, dead soul insects) or soul collectors are long, thin, white, flying demons which resemble a cross between a snake and an insect in the manga and anime series InuYasha.
Their main purpose is to gather the souls of dead women (死魂, shinidama) for Kikyo, the woman who InuYasha was in love with 50 years prior and who was brought back to life by Urasue.
The soul collectors wait until the woman is dead. When her soul arises to go on its way, it's snatched up by the creature's six legs.
A mere blow can destroy a soul collector. So when they collect the souls, they must take utmost care as to not be destroyed. Even in the case of their destruction, Kikyo sends dozens to collect souls from all over Japan, to be sure that they find souls and return them to her. Their origins remain a mystery, nothing has ever been stated in that regard. It is also unknown how and why Kikyo is able to control them in the first place. They seem to be lesser demons, as in one episode, InuYasha slew an over-sized, red soul collector sent by Naraku to kill Kikyo by depriving her of souls. This larger example was called a demon by InuYasha.
Kikyo has used them to lift herself off the ground and carry her away. She also used them to lift Kagome when she stole Kagome's jewel shard to give to Naraku.
Kikyo employs one to recover the remnants of Midoriko's soul to help her recover from Naraku's Shōki, which Kagome was only able to purify for a while.
