The town of Shindand is the center of the Shindand District in the Herat Province, Afghanistan. It is located on at 1066 m Altitude. Near by the town is Shindand Airbase (a military and civil airport).
This town is the historic Persian city of Sabzevar. Its Persian name is in recent times changed into "Shindand" (a Pashtun word meaning "Green pond") by the govenrmnet in line with its Pashtunisation policy.
