From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shimokita (下北郡; -gun) is a district located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It occupies most of the northern handle of the Shimokita Peninsula with the exception of Mutsu city and contains the most northern point on the island of Honshū.
As of 2003, the district has an estimated population of 36,037 and a density of 31 persons per km² (80 persons per mi²). The total area is 1,168.90 km² (450 mi²).
Since that time, however, the municipalities Kawauchi (川内町, - machi) are, Ōhata (大畑町, - machi) and the village Wakinosawa (脇野沢村, - mura) (including the Osorezan) have merged into the city Mutsu, decreasing the population of the district.
There is also a native population of Japanese monkeys, making it the furthest north anywhere in the world where monkeys live.
