Shilin District (traditional Chinese: 士林區; Hanyu Pinyin: Shìlín Qū; Tongyong Pinyin: Shìhlín Cyu; Wade-Giles: Shih-lin Ch'ü; Taiwanese: Sū-lîm Khu) is a district of Taipei. The name "Shilin" was derived from Pattsiran, the Ketagalan word for "hot spring". It was then transliterated into Chinese as "八芝蘭" Bāzhīlán, and finally re-analyzed as "scholars as many as the trees in the woods" (士多如林).
Shilin is foremost a residential district and has several famous neighbourhoods, such as Waishuangxi (外雙溪) and Tianmu. Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-Shek lived in Shilin after he moved the Chinese nationalist government to Taiwan. A large foreign population lives in Shilin; mainly concentrated in the Tianmu area. Both the Taipei American School and the Taipei Japanese School are located in this district. (Shilin even has a Mormon temple.)
Tourist attractions include the Yangmingshan National Park, the National Palace Museum, Chiang Kai-shek's residence (士林官邸), and the Shilin Night Market.
Shilin has three universities: Ming Chuan University, Soochow University, and the Chinese Culture University.
The central command of the R.O.C. Navy is in Shilin.
