Shields is an unincorporated community in Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. The population was 6,590 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 6.6 square miles (17.1 km²), of which, 6.5 square miles (16.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.06%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 6,590 people, 2,508 households, and 1,875 families residing in the community. The population density was 1,007.9 per square mile (389.1/km²). There were 2,587 housing units at an average density of 395.7/sq mi (152.7/km²). The racial makeup of the community was 96.74% White, 0.80% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.74% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.32% of the population.
There were 2,508 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the community the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.
The median income for a household in the community was $49,859, and the median income for a family was $57,380. Males had a median income of $46,421 versus $26,413 for females. The per capita income for the community was $23,519. About 1.0% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 6.4% of those age 65 or over.
