Shiba Yoshimune

Shiba Yoshimune (斯波義統? 1513 - August 10, 1554) was the final head of the Shiba clan and governor of Owari Province during the latter half of the Sengoku period of feudal Japan. Being the governor of Owari Province at the time that Oda Nobuhide–father of the future warlord Oda Nobunaga–was conflicting with civil strife against the Oda of Iwakura Castle, with intentions to ultimately occupy the eight districts within the province, Yoshimune was in control of Kiyosu Castle as his base of power. As Nobuhide lost his life through illness in 1551, Yoshimune learned that Nobunaga, a young man known for his reckless nature that was dangerous for the situation, was to become the heir to the branch of Oda under his jurisdiction. Knowing that it would be far too risky to select an alternate head of the Oda's Kiyosu branch with Oda Nobutomo, head of the Iwakura, as his patron, Yoshimune immediately began communicating with Nobunaga about a false assassination plot formed by Nobutomo in an attempt to rid the former from his side and allowing him greater authority into the future. Unfortunately, however, this plot became apparent to Nobutomo through the ears of his retainers, and Yoshimune was thus put to death by his own hands during the year of 1554.
