[edit] Pre-debut

SHINee remained a secret until May 18, 2008 when the introduction of the new group surfaced on various articles on the Internet. However, the members of the band have made small appearances without alerting the media about the band. Jonghyun, for instance, lent his voice in a duet with Zhang Li Yin, "Wrongly Given Love" (交错的爱), which was recorded in Zhang Li Yin's first Chinese album. Key made a cameo appearance in Super Junior's first film, Attack on the Pin-Up Boys. Minho appeared in Ha SangBaek's fashion show in March 2008. On May 19, 2008 a teaser for the group's debut single's music video appeared on their official website. SHINee's debut music video was released on May 22, 2008 and their first mini album on May 23, 2008. SHINee is described as a contemporary band and is composed of five teenagers whose ages range from fourteen to eighteen years old. According to S.M. Entertainment, SHINee will lead the generation with their trendy dance, fashion, and music.[1]

[edit] Origin of the Name

SHINee's name is the combination of "shine" and "ee." The "ee" is meant as "receive," which therefore makes the name's meaning "one who receive the light," or "to receive the spotlight." SHINee's goal is to fascinate fans, regardless of their age or where they come from, with their diverse music, compelling dancing, and trendy fashion.

[edit] Appearance

Although they are portrayed as a new idol group, compared to other boy idol groups such as TVXQ, Super Junior, H.O.T, ShinHwa, Sechs Kies and Big Bang, they have not yet reached the same standard of looks as the other idol groups but as they are a new and young band, they have the potential to enhance their image and be compared to some of the bigger names.

[edit] 2008: Debut
