The Sheppard East LRT is a proposed light rail line in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, as part of the Transit City proposal announced March 16, 2007, to be operated by the Toronto Transit Commission. It is expected to cost approximately $555 million. With construction to begin in 2009, the line is expected to open in 2012, the first of the seven Transit City lines to be complete.

[edit] Route layout
The Sheppard East LRT line would run for 13.6km, estimated to account for 17 million trips in 2021. The western terminus of the line would be built at Don Mills Station at Don Mills Road in North York. The line would run along Sheppard Avenue East, where the formerly proposed Sheppard East subway extension would have been built. The line would continue east until it terminates at Morningside Avenue in Scarborough. After the line is built, a future extension east into Durham Region may be considered.
For passengers travelling between downtown North York and downtown Scarborough, a transfer between the Sheppard subway and the Sheppard East LRT at Don Mills station would be required if the LRT line were built. A transfer would also be required between the Sheppard East LRT line and the Scarborough RT, which is proposed[1] to meet the LRT line at Sheppard Avenue and Markham Road.
[edit] Final route
As of June 4, 2008, the TTC intends to replace the entire Sheppard East bus route with an LRT, which means that it will now extend farther east than Morningside to Meadowvale Road. There are two options favoured for connecting to the Sheppard subway. The first option involves extending the subway one station east to Consumers Road, where the station would no longer be located 18m underground, but rather just under street level so that the LRT could terminate on-street. The other, more practical option sees the LRT dive underground west of Consumers road to meet the subway at a level interchange- customers would walk west along the same platform to reach the subway. This option is more practical because it allows for the possibility of converting the existing subway to part of this LRT route. Also, the TTC had discussed plans for a branch route to the Scarborough Town Centre via either Brimley or McCowan, but this was not explored any further. Non-revenue tracks will run in mixed traffic from Consumers Road to Don Mills Road to allow the LRT to connect to the planned Don Mills LRT route.
