Shenzhou 9 will be an unmanned flight of the People's Republic of China's Shenzhou spacecraft. The aim of the mission will be to dock with the an unmanned space laboratory module, launched with the callsign of Shenzhou 8. This docking will be followed a month later by the manned flight of Shenzhou 10, carrying a crew to the new space station. According to Soviet practice, the departing crew will return to Earth aboard the Shenzhou 9.
The Shenzhou 9 will have two main functions:
- Shenzhou cargo (货运飞船) used to ferry water, food, propellant and equipments.
- Emergency escape spacecraft (救生船).
