[edit] Storylines
Peter Barlow illegally married Shelley, as he was already married to Lucy Richards, with whom he had a child. He did not tell either of them he was married to another woman. He had told Lucy that he had broken up with Shelley, and no-one knew about Peter's secret marriage with Lucy. After his bigamy was discovered, Peter was hated by many people in the street. Lucy Richards successfully fled to Australia with Peter's baby. Peter then left the street. Since then, Shelley has had a relationship with Charlie Stubbs, which also ended in disaster.
Charlie took control of Shelley's life, and turned her against her old friend Sunita Alahan and her mother Bev. When her mother moved back to the street, Shelley developed agoraphobia and wouldn't leave her bedroom. Charlie saw this an excuse to cheat on her. Shelley eventually became wise to what was going on and in part 2 of the double episode on Monday 19 September 2005 she dumped Charlie at the altar much to the delight of viewers.
After a string of bad dates since dumping Charlie, Shelley had decided her life was getting nowhere. In July 2006 she was offered the job of landlady at a pub in the Peak District in Derbyshire by a representative of Newton and Ridley brewery. Shelley accepted the job and left Weatherfield that month.
Shelley returned in September 2006 to reveal she was pregnant. Charlie Stubbs turned out to be the baby's father after Shelley had a one-night stand with him just days before she left for Derbyshire. The only other people that know about the baby are Shelley's mother Bev, Fred Elliott and Deirdre Barlow, whom Bev told. Deidre decided to tell daughter Tracy of the revelation against Bev's wishes in the hope her daughter would see sense about the man she lived with. Tracy was devastated and she had a confrontation with Shelley, then with Charlie when he returned from a trip away. Bev wanted Shelley to have an abortion as the child will keep reminding them of all the bad times they had with Charlie. Shelley though, wanted to keep the baby. After a final confrontation with Charlie, Shelley left Weatherfield for good, but not before telling Bev she would not attend her wedding to Fred Elliott.
It has since been reported Shelley has since had the baby and resolved things with Bev, but nobody knows whether the child is male or female. Liz McDonald went to see Shelley for several weeks in June 2007.
