Shell Flat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shell Flat is a shallow area of the sea 7km off the coast from Cleveleys in Lancashire, England. It is the site of a proposed wind farm, also to be called Shell Flat, which will contain 90 turbines and generate 180MW of electricity. The developer, Cirrus Energy, is a consortium made up of CeltPower Ltd, Elsam A/S and Shell Wind Energy Aegir Ltd [1].

Cirrus energy applied for planning permission for the project in January 2003, but as of June 2006 consent has not been given due to objection by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The RSPB felt that the development would have an adverse impact on a population of 50,000+ Common Scoter which winter in the area [2].
